What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is a situation that involves a severe toothache, a knocked-out or injured tooth, infection, facial swelling, or injury to the tongue, gums, or lips. Dental emergencies may not always seem as serious as they are, which is why it’s important to seek prompt care to avoid complications.

What Are Common Dental Emergencies?
Here are quick, parent-friendly tips for some of the most common pediatric dental emergencies:
Severe Toothaches: Rinse with warm salt water and use floss to dislodge any food stuck between two teeth, which can be the cause of the pain. Pediatrician-approved over-the-counter pain reliever and cold compresses can help relieve any pain or swelling. Make sure to call us for urgent care.
Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth: Pick the tooth up by its crown, not the root, and gently rinse it without scrubbing. Try to return the affected tooth to its socket, and if that’s not possible, place it in some saliva or milk and call us immediately for urgent care. The sooner the tooth is treated, the better the chances of saving it.
Knocked-Out Baby Tooth: If your child knocks out a baby tooth, we never attempt reimplanting it to avoid infection or damage to the incoming permanent tooth. However, it’s important to have your child’s smile evaluated as soon as possible.
A Chipped or Fractured Tooth: Rinse the area with warm water and save any tooth fragments. Apply cold compresses to reduce swelling, then schedule a same-day appointment.
A Loose or Dislodged Tooth: Injury or trauma can cause a tooth to become loose or dislodged. Have your child bite down gently on gauze to keep the affected tooth in place, and contact us for immediate care. Our pediatric dentist will determine the best treatment options depending on whether it’s a baby tooth or a permanent one, and based on the extent of damage.
Facial Swelling: Facial swelling is usually the result of an infection, which can pose a risk to your child’s health. Use cold compresses to relieve swelling or discomfort, and call our office immediately for urgent care. If the swelling is severe, head to the nearest emergency room.
Soft Tissue Injury: Injury to the lips, cheek, or tongue can lead to significant bleeding. Apply gentle pressure to the affected area with clean gauze to stop the bleeding. If bleeding is heavy and uncontrolled, head to your nearest emergency room.
